THIBODAUX, La. (AP) — Officials say Lafourche Parish public schools will have more security if voters approve a May 2 measure to reallocate part of a property tax for safety initiatives.
The Daily Comet reports (http://bit.ly/1DqB3Bd) the school district is seeking to rededicate 4 of 15.2 mills used to pay off construction bonds, a measure that would bring in $3.8 million a year.
A mill is $1 in tax levied on every $1,000 of taxable property. The measure would not increase taxes. If passed, it will be renewable in 10 years.
School system spokesman Floyd Benoit says the money would go toward initiatives such as buying security cameras and alarm systems, hiring additional school police officers and making every school single-point entry.
