BEDFORD HILLS, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a health aide and her 87-year-old passenger fled to safety seconds before a train smashed into their car.
The women were shaken but physically unharmed after the harrowing incident Wednesday afternoon in the hamlet of Bedford Hills, New York. The front of the car was demolished.
According to the Journal News (http://lohud.us/1NAPtr0 ) the aide told authorities she tried to put the car in reverse as a crossing gate came down it.
A passenger said the train halted abruptly then a transit worker ran up the aisle saying "Oh my God."
The health aide received a summons for blocking a railroad crossing. Transit officials said the gate and signals were operating properly.
The crash disrupted evening rush-hour service for thousands of passengers on the railroad's Harlem line.
