DULUTH, Minn. (AP) — A cargo ship detained at a Lake Superior port in Minnesota for more than a month has finally departed.
Duluth Seaway Port Authority spokeswoman Adele Yorde says the oceangoing M/V Cornelia left the port of Duluth on Friday morning. The ship had been detained for six weeks due to allegations of environmental violations.
The first visible movement on the stalemate came Wednesday when the Cornelia was allowed to dock. It had been anchored just outside the Duluth harbor while the Coast Guard investigated the alleged discharge of oily water somewhere other than Duluth. The international crew had little to do but wait since taking on a load of grain destined for Tunisia in November.
The Coast Guard had said it wanted a security agreement in place before releasing the vessel.
The 576-foot, Liberian-flagged Cornelia is managed by the German shipping company MST Mineralien Schiffahrt. Company officials haven't responded to requests for comment from The Associated Press.
