BALTIMORE (AP) — Officials confirmed a high-ranking Baltimore police commander who's being investigated over the use of non-profit funds has been recalled from a national police fellowship in another blow for the city's scandal-plagued police force.
The Baltimore Sun reports Maj. Kimberly Burrus was recalled from the International Association of Chiefs of Police and suspended without pay Monday, though the theft investigation into her has been open since at least December.
Burrus founded a nonprofit to improve police-community relations after the death of Freddie Gray in police custody.
The Sun says Burrus and her husband, Torran Burrus, said during a custody hearing that she's being investigated for spending funds on vacation tickets. Kimberly Burrus said she spent more of her money on the nonprofit than she spent on the flights.
The newspaper couldn't reach Kimberly Burrus or her attorney, Martin Cadogan, for comment Tuesday.
