SALT LAKE CITY -- Several Utah students received recognition at the State Capitol Friday for overcoming struggles to become proficient readers.
School districts from throughout the state nominated students.
They all got prizes, but one student won the "Small Smiles Presidential Reading Award," and along with it, a big bookworm reading buddy.
Cierra Bryant of Freedom Elementary in Roy also got a big check for a shopping spree at Toys R Us, along a $1,000 college scholarship. The 6-year-old was the contest's youngest winner.
Judges were touched by her essay, in which she described how she was teased for being a struggling reader but has now overcome her challenge and reads with enthusiasm.
