SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah gubernatorial candidate and Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon says he supports the idea of online petition signatures.
Earlier this week, Lt. Gov. Greg Bell said the state would not recognize electronic signatures on petitions to put initiatives on the ballot.
In a statement, Corroon said, "Citizens are able to apply for a mortgage, pay their bills, renew their vehicle's registration and file their taxes online. Registering to vote and signing petitions should be no exception."
State law acknowledges that electronic signatures are valid substitutes for handwritten ones, but the election code makes numerous references to paper forms that must meet strict guidelines before they can be accepted.
No state currently allows electronic signatures to be submitted for initiatives, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.
