Temporary license to be offered to drivers trying to renew

SALT LAKE CITY -- State agencies are taking steps to make the driver license renewal process easier.

**Important information from DMV**Effective January 1, 2010, ALL applicants for a Utah driver license (original, renewal or duplicate) or Identification card will need to provide: - Original or copies certified by the issuing agency showing evidence of your identity - Legal/lawful presence - Social Security Number or ITIN; - Two proofs of Utah residence address, if it is different than the address on your current Utah record - Evidence of name change, if applicable

Starting Monday, residents who try to renew their driver license but don't have all the required documents can get a six-month temporary license, letting them continue to drive legally while they take care of their renewal. The Department of Public Safety says the permit will give people time to get a copy of their social security card or birth certificate so they can comply with the new rules.

In addition, the Draper DMV office will extend its hours to include Fridays, beginning Feb. 12.

The changes are a response to public outcry over long wait times and renewal hassles associated with the new rules.
