There is something fun and unique about nice, comfortable neighborhood establishments where you can dine on a regular basis, become friends with the proprietor and be familiar with the proffered goods and services.
Such is the case with the Boston Deli in downtown Salt Lake City. For the past 16 years, downtown employees and visitors alike have enjoyed the restaurant, located in the basement of the Boston Building at 9 Exchange Place, which boasts delicious made-from-scratch soup and sandwiches.
Dan Hansen, who co-owns the restaurant with Henry Carbajal, says the Boston Deli was established in 1993. Both he and Henry worked at the restaurant until 2001, when they decided to form a partnership to purchase the deli. Since that time, they have dramatically expanded the catering side of the business and increased the deli's interior.
The full catering menu includes continental breakfast selection; vegetable, fruit and cheese trays; hot lunches and lunch bars; and snack items. All food is made to order and Dan says you won't find any prepackaged meats or cheeses. The Boston Deli is equipped to provide same-day catering service for orders received before 9:30 a.m. And recently Dan and Henry began offering free delivery on box lunch orders in the downtown area.
Patrons enjoy the deli's casual, friendly atmosphere and affordable prices. Some of the most popular sandwiches include the turkey ranch, the meatball-provolone cheese and the chili beef. The daily soup selection and salads, such as Cobb and Chicken Caesar, are also top sellers. From the catering menu, the Italian sausage lasagna, manicotti, mushroom chicken, and teriyaki salmon have received rave reviews.
Dan and Henry are considering the possibility of opening additional locations but nothing is final yet. They feel the quality of food at the Boston Deli speaks for itself and hope to see it continue to grow.
