Something quite remarkable is happening in Southern Utah in behalf of those 20 to 30 families who tragically lost their homes during January’s flooding.
Federal and State funds have been designated to help repair the public infrastructure. However, nothing from government sources has been designated to help the victims themselves, and few had insurance, so an intense volunteer effort is underway with the goal of getting everybody back to their pre-flood condition.
It is easy to empathize with what happened. Land literally washed away! Homes and personal effects swept downstream! Lives unalterably disrupted! So the community is mobilizing to help.
A non-profit volunteer group, Utah Flood Relief, has been organized as a central clearinghouse for both cash and in-kind donations. A 140-page commemorative book and DVD have gone on sale with all proceeds going to the victims. Developers are offering land, contractors their services and suppliers their goods. Financial institutions are considering reducing or forgiving debt. Businesses throughout Utah are getting involved. You can, too, by visiting their website at www.utahfloodrelief.com.
Two million dollars is what is needed to get those affected back on their feet. In this day and age when so many victims of disaster rely on the government to bail them out, KSL believes what is taking place around St. George really is quite remarkable.
