TOPSFIELD, Mass. (AP) -- A Massachusetts high school is offering grief counseling today to students mourning the death of a 17-year-old boy killed in an avalanche in Utah.
Authorities say Brian Schwartz from Topsfield, Mass., died on Sunday near Snowbasin ski resort. The boy was apparently skiing out of bounds in an area called Hell's Canyon when he was caught in the slide.
According to the Utah Avalanche Center --- ski patrol had talked to the teen and his father and brother earlier that day about the risks of backcountry skiing.
Schartz was a senior and honor role student at Masconomet Regional High School. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.
The teen was among six people killed in avalanches over the weekend in Utah, Idaho and Montana.
