SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A resolution that reaffirms the phrase "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance has passed a House committee.

The resolution, sponsored by Representative Kerry Gibson, is to ensure the pledge remains the same as it has been since 1954. That's when the phrase was added.

The Ogden Republican says this nation was founded on a belief in God, and says it needs to continue to be part of our pledge.

Gibson says the resolution is similar to ones in other states, and is part of a nationwide effort by veterans groups to maintain the phrase in the Pledge of Allegiance.

It now heads to the House for consideration.
