Man killed in TRAX accident

SALT LAKE CITY -- A man was killed Friday night when he was hit by a TRAX train at 400 South and Main Street.

Utah Transit Authority officials say the man was a riding in between two cars on a TRAX train. As his train was passing another train, which was going in the opposite direction, he either attempted to jump or fell.

The train the man was riding on ran over his leg, severing it. He was then hit by the passing train.

The man was taken to the hospital in extremely critical condition, where he later died.

UTA says all TRAX service north of the accident scene has been stopped. Officials do not yet know when that service will be restored.

Police of not released the man's name, but they say he appeared to be in his 40s.
