SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Questar officials say homeowners should take winter safety precautions to ensure efficient operation of natural gas equipment, including preventing snow from piling up on meters.

The company says customers should be careful when shoveling snow from driveways, sidewalks or roofs to avoid burying meters. Piling snow onto a meter can damage it or cover a regulator vent, causing the meter to malfunction.

Keeping meters free from snow also allows for easy access to shut-off valves in an emergency.

Questar also advises homeowners to keep intake and exhaust vents on roofs or near the ground free from ice and snow. They say clear vents keep pilots lights burning and allow for the safe, effective operations of appliances.
