A man who forced an emergency landing on a Delta flight appeared in court today.

Thomas McSherry is charged with one count of interference with a flight crew for refusing to fasten his seat belt and stop using his cell phone on a flight from New York to San Francisco Monday. He also insulted and threatened flight attendants.

The plane had to land in Salt Lake where officers took him into custody. At the time of his arrest, officers said they could smell alcohol on him.

If convicted, McSherry could face up to 20 years in prison
