PROVO, Utah (AP) -- The mayor of Lindon announced he will leave office in June to serve as a mission president for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Mayor Jeff Acerson said he and his family will move in July. He said the church has not finalized where he will be serving.

Acerson said he and his family are excited to be able to serve collectively. "It gives us an opportunity to serve others."

A new mayor will be appointed to serve until the end of the year. In November, a general election will be held to find a mayor to serve out the final two years of Acerson's term.

Acerson's term would have been up in January 2010.
