(KSL News) -- A short stretch of a downtown Salt Lake City street could soon be renamed to honor the cluster of businesses that once made it a cultural hub for many Japanese people.
In the next few weeks, the Salt Lake City Council is expected to rename the block of 100 South between 200 and 300 West as Japantown Street.
Most of Japantown was knocked down in the 1960s to make room for the Salt Palace. All that's left today are a church and a Buddhist Temple.
The Japanese Community Restoration Committee says there is still hope that someone will help finance a new Japantown.
