SALT LAKE CITY -- The KSL TV Newsroom was overrun with local college mascots Wednesday.

Cosmo (BYU Cougars), Swoop (Utah Utes), Big Blue (Utah State Aggies), Waldo (Weber State Wildcats)and Thor (Southern Utah T-Birds) were the biggest stars as the KSL 5 Promotions and SportsBeat Teams filmed "ESPN-like" spots celebrating the arrival of football season and promoting SportsBeats' dominant coverage.

The 15 second spots which are scheduled to begin with Thursday night's college football season kickoff put the mascots and KSL TV's SportsBeat talent in ridiculous and wacky scenarios.

For example:

  • Mascots "working hard" in the sports department
  • Walking nonchalantly in and out of elevators. How many mascots can you squeeze in an elevator?
  • Playing out the natural tensions in the BYU/Utah rivalry. This was classic stuff.

This is an unprecedented collaboration in the history of Utah television, the mascots from the "Big 5" all appearing together in commercials.

Make sure you watch KSL 5 over the next several weeks as we roll them all out.

Big 5 mascots invade KSL TV

Thoughts from Big BlueThis morning I made my way from my beautiful Cache Valley to Salt Lake and KSL 5 to show the news team what time it was and to help them out around the studio. I Must say we make a great team. It was also a pleasure to work with Swoop, Cosmo, Waldo and Thor. All very competitive, but fun guys. Its football season and Big Blue has new energy for this year. Go Aggies!
