By all accounts Greg Bell is a very likeable chap, a peach of a fellow, indeed, an affable and gracious gentleman. In addition to those many congenial attributes, he has proven to be an intelligent, skilled and unifying politician, and an effective moderating voice in an increasingly strident political world.

Last Thursday, a Senate committee approved the two-term senator from Fruit Heights to be Utah's next lieutenant governor. Tomorrow, his name goes before the entire senate. As a tribute to his stature among his peers, Bell's confirmation is expected to be swift and overwhelming, or in the words of the Senate President, "a slam-dunk."

That is as it should be in this instance. Governor Gary Herbert made a wise choice when he selected Senator Bell to become his partner in governing the Beehive State. As an attorney, a small town mayor and the senate's Majority Assistant Whip, Bell has approached his duties with refreshing wisdom and sensibility. The state would be a better place if more politicians could somehow emulate his judicious and moderate style.

KSL heartily welcomes Greg Bell as Utah's new lieutenant governor. His leadership is sure to be an asset as the state navigates through the economic and political minefields that are ahead.
