A 2-year-old boy suffered critical injuries when a relative backed over him with a vehicle in a driveway in Sandy. Andrew Adams has details for Utah's Morning News.

It happened around 6:45 p.m. Sunday at a home near 9400 South and 475 East.

Lt. Mitch Howard with the Sandy Police Department says the relative was trying to get a pickup truck out of the driveway and didn't see the child. Police are now calling it a tragic reminder.

"Any time you are backing out of a driveway, pulling into a driveway where you know there are kids in the area, just take that extra moment to walk around the vehicle and make sure there are no children around," Howard said.

The child was rushed to Alta View Hospital. Police are continuing their investigation, but say charges against any family member are unlikely.

"In this type of situation, they're very distraught and we're working with them to try to get them the help they're going to need right now and the support they'll need," Howard said.
