OREM, Utah (AP) -- David Heck scored 20 points Friday to lead Utah Valley State to a 64-55 win over visiting Southern Utah.
The Wolverines (7-5) enjoyed a double-digit lead for most of the second half, but the Thunderbirds (8-5) scored eight straight to pull within 55-49 with five minutes left. But Heck quelled the rally and sapped SUU of its momentum when he made a 3-pointer with 3:57 to go. The T-Birds didnt score again until just over a minute remained in the game and never posed a serious threat the rest of the way.
UVSC built a 22-9 lead in the first half when Southern Utah began the game shooting 2-for-14 from the field.
A 3-pointer by Wolverine forward Richard Troyer in the waning moments of the first half gave Utah Valley a 32-17 halftime advantage and its largest lead of the game.
Senior guard Steve Barnes led the T-Birds with 16 points and Brad Kanis came off the bench to collect 12 rebounds and block 10 shots for SUU.
Troyer added 11 points for the Wolverines, including three 3-pointers.
