SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Utah residents are being asked to be on alert over the air quality.
That's because the Utah Department of Environmental Quality has issued a "red alert" today for Salt Lake, Utah and Davis counties.
This means people are prohibited from using coal and wood burning stoves and fireplaces. Utahns are also being urged to minimize their driving by carpooling or using public transportation.
During the alert, pollution levels are considered unhealthy for people with respiratory or heart disease, the elderly and children. Those groups are urged to avoid strenuous outdoor activities and limit their time outdoors.
The alert is expected to be in effect for at least the next 12 to 24 hours.
