(KSL News) The man accused of starving his ex-girlfriend's five-year-old daughter appeared in court today.

While Anahi Ferrando served in Iraq she left her daughter Jade in the care of Michael Bowden. Jade's weight dropped from 30 pounds to 13 pounds.

Michael Bowden faces felony child abuse charges for starving Jade Anzures while her mother served in Iraq.

Bowden has pleaded not guilty.

Bill Kendall, Prosecutor: "It's a serious child abuse charge that we've filed against him. In the information and the injury that he caused, that we allege he caused, to the victim. I think this is supported by the factual information that we have supported in the charges."

Ferrando has since returned from Iraq and and left the Army to be with Jade.

The judge who has ruled over the case now plans to retire so a new judge took over. Today, that judge set another court date for early next year.
