WASHINGTON, Dec 15, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., the presumptive speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, plans to set up a new committee to oversee intelligence spending.
Pelosi told The New York Times the committee will work within the Appropriations Committee and will also include representatives who sit on the intelligence panel. It is to be called the Select Intelligence Oversight Committee.
"Its purpose is to protect the American people with the best possible intelligence, recognizing the role that Congress plays in all of this," Pelosi said.
The bipartisan committee that investigated the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks called for greater congressional oversight. Pelosi said she favors more openness, and that -- while some intelligence information must be closely held -- there is much that all members of Congress should know.
