SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Utah House Speaker Dave Clark has told Lt. Gov. Gary Herbert he's not interested in succeeding him in the post once Herbert becomes the state's 17th governor.

Herbert will become governor assuming Gov. Jon Huntsman is confirmed as U.S. ambassador to China.

Clark told The Associated Press on Thursday that he met with Herbert last month to discuss his interest in the job. Clark had frequently been mentioned in political circles as a potential pick before their meeting.

Clark says he and Herbert discussed their backgrounds and values, but he told Herbert he wants to remain House speaker.

Herbert spokeswoman Angie Welling has said Herbert will announce his pick for lieutenant governor sometime after Huntsman is confirmed by the U.S. Senate and before Herbert's inauguration.
