PARK CITY, Utah (AP) -- Workers are assembling a funicular railway at Park City's Deer Valley Resort.

A 500-ton crane is hoisting two 15-passenger cabins onto the mountain railway -- the finishing touch.

The tracks climb 500 vertical feet from the base of the ski area to The St. Regis Deer Crest Resort, which opens this fall.

The self-leveling cabins ride on tracks that climb 500 vertical feet in 90 seconds at angles as steep as 80 degrees.

It's being promoted as the first funicular at a North American ski resort. The heated or air conditioned cabins will be open for public use free of charge.

It will take guests or visitors to Deer Crest's main building at a plaza that includes a restaurant, 3,000-bottle wine bar, 14,000 square-foot spa, and even a "beach" on an outdoor terrace overlooking ski slopes.
