SALT LAKE CITY -- The Canyons School District is warning 6,000 of its current and former employees that their personal information may have been compromised.
On Thursday, it was discovered that a USB flash drive containing the names, address, birth dates and Social Security numbers of thousands of employees was missing.
Spokesman Jeff Haney says an employee was using the drive to transfer data.
He said, "We simply can't find it. At this point we have no reason to believe the information has been accessed by a third party."
Haney says they are being proactive and telling anyone who calls about ways to check their credit.
"We really do, at this point, have no reason to believe this information is being used for an illegal purpose," he said.
Haney says from now on, no sensitive information data will be stored on flash drives.
They have launched an investigation. The employee who lost the USB drive is on administrative leave.
Haney says anyone with questions should call the Canyons District Offices at 801-501-1000 and ask for him or for Jennifer Toomer-Cook.
