SUGAR HOUSE -- Fans of the annual fireworks in Sugarhouse Park gathered for what could be the final show Saturday night.
The fireworks at Sugarhouse Park have been a Utah tradition for decades. The tradition could end after this year, however, because of budget concerns.
Jared Winger goes to the show every year. "I don't think there's anything that compares to the Fourth here at Sugar House," he said.
Many expressed sadness and disappointment at the thought of a Fourth of July without the fireworks.
With the economy still struggling, the Sugarhouse Park Authority says it simply can't fund the event anymore. "We just reached a point where we don't feel it's the responsible thing to do, to fund the fireworks at the cost of park improvements," said Park Authority President Lex Hemphill.
The park authority has just $50,000 in its budget. The fireworks eat up about $27,000 of that budget each year, leaving little room for anything else.
