OGDEN -- Ogden police officers are looking for a burglar they say shot a homeowner three times Friday. As of Saturday, they didn't have any suspects.
A man was sleeping at his home on the 800 block of Canyon Road Friday night, when he woke up just before 11:30 to see a burglar in his house. They started fighting.
Lt. Mike Ashment of the Ogden Police Department said, "At some point during that struggle, the suspect shot the victim three times and left through a screen door."
The victim was able to call 911, and officers arrived to find him lying on his bed. He was shot in his hand, leg and stomach area. All three bullets went straight through his body, and police say he's lucky to be alive.
Ashment says it's rare for a burglary to end in a shooting. "If this is the typical burglary where the burglar is going in to steal some property, this is the anomaly. We typically don't see people getting shot during the course of a burglary," he said.
Officers are now looking to catch the suspect, but they don't have much of a description to go on. "We'll re-interview the victim, see if we can get some more information regarding the suspect's description," Ashment said.
The man was last reported to be in fair condition at Ogden's McKay-Dee Hospital. Police said the man's prognosis was so good, he could be released from the hospital on Saturday.
