SOUTH SALT LAKE - Alumni of Granite High School got a final chance to walk through the halls before the doors close for good.

Granite High School has a history that dates back to 1906. At an open house Friday, graduates of the past and more recent past got a chance soak up the memories one last time.

Valerie Porter graduated in 1952. "It's very nostalgic. I hate to see this happen, but I guess progress has to take precedence," she said.

Lizzy Anderson graduated just last year. "This school is part of who my family is. I'm the third-generation student here," she said.

Graduates took time to snap photos of a mosaic in the hallway, sing the Song of G in the gymnasium and browse through memorabilia dating back to the early 1900s.

It was a day that came with a lot of sadness, but it also brought back good memories too. "A lot of great memories at this place, a lot of great memories and great people," said Hal Erickson, a former teacher and coach.

While no one knows for sure what will happen to it, the graduates hope Granite High School doesn't completely go away.

"I hope that they turn it into a community center. Everyone knows Granite High School. It needs to be a place we can come and feel like a community," said Anderson.

The open house included a booth selling yearbooks and school T-shirts, and a concert in the auditorium. Graduates were able to sign up to be a part of the alumni directory.
