OGDEN -- Following a flood of high-profile crimes outside a pair of nightclubs, Ogden police have a renewed warning for the businesses: Don't let underage drinkers inside your doors.
"We'll be out there doing some checks, some business checks,in reference to make sure they are in compliance," Ogden Police Lt. Scott Conley told KSL NewsRadio on Tuesday. "If not, we're going to file the complaints we need to file."
Over the past couple of weeks, officers have responded to a shooting outside one club and a kidnapping outside another. Most recently, police said a man held his girlfriend against her will at gunpoint after she was seen inside an establishment dancing with someone else.
Conley said both cases have involved underage people who were let inside the clubs. To the credit of the businesses, Conley said the underage people had been kicked out; however, they shouldn't be let in in the first place.
"The age is a violation of state law. That's an issue we're going to have to deal with," Conley said. "But I think maybe some of it's the lax business practices or tactics of each location."
Conley said, lately, the problems appear to have escalated, which is prompting detectives to renew their scrutiny.
"We're going to have to do that through enforcement," he said.
