WEST VALLEY CITY -- A crash at the busy intersection of 4000 South and 1300 West sent a police officer to the hospital Tuesday.
Police say the officer, who was driving an unmarked car, was traveling east at 4000 South when a car made a left turn in front of him. He tried to swerve to avoid the car but ended up being T-boned.
The force of the crash sent the officer's car onto a landscaped hill, which then sent a boulder dozens of feet into an apartment parking lot. The crash also destroyed the front end of an SUV, but police say the driver of the SUV was OK.
West Valley police Lt. Dale Brophy says the officer was was not using his lights or siren at the time of the accident. He was transported to the hospital to be checked out, but he is also believed to be OK.
Witnesses say just moments before the crash, a man was standing at the intersection, holding a sign warning motorists to slow down. Brophy says West Valley motor officers were conducting traffic enforcement just west of the area, and the sign-carrier apparently wanted to warn other drivers.
"Traffic on all intersections that aren't along the 3500 South corridor right now is heavier because of construction," Brophy said. "As far as speed, we're very proactive in enforcing speed here in West Valley."
The crash happened right on the West Valley-Taylorsville border. West Valley police are investigating the incident.
