As I parked my car in front of the Jorgenson Companies building in Salt Lake City, the first thing I noticed was the sign on the structure with the image of an arm with muscles flexed; beneath it, the company's slogan read, "Strong on Customer Service."
I asked Lance Jorgenson, the North Area sales manager, about the logo and he told me that for this family business, customer service has been a guiding principle and primary focus. Jorgenson Companies has been in business since 1967 and specializes in machine tools and metal fabrication machinery, storage and work area products.
Five siblings, four brothers and one sister, are all involved in the day-to-day operation of the Jorgenson Companies. Lance walked me through the giant headquarter office, which has more than 33,000 square feet of inventory space. I learned that the Tooele facility is even larger, with more than 45,000 square feet of storage space. Each building is loaded with shelving, cabinets, lockers, shop furniture, shop equipment, metal working machinery and storage racks.
The company has two main divisions: Jorgenson Machine Tools and Jorgenson Material Handling. The Machine Tools Division is an industry leader in sales and service of metal working machinery. The Material Handling Division features steel shelving, pallet racking, cantilever racking, mezzanines, cabinets, shop equipment and furniture. Lockers have been a primary focus for Jorgenson Material Handling, and through the company's product knowledge and superior customer service, it has become the industry leader in new and used locker sales. Jorgenson Companies' Web site, SchoolLockers.com, helped it become one of the largest locker retailers in the United States.
