ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) -- A 19-year-old woman from St. George has been named Miss Deaf Utah.

Natisha Luke won the 2009 Miss Deaf Utah Ambassadorship Program competition on June 13 in Riverton.

Luke won a $2,000 scholarship and plans to study teaching or pediatric nursing when she starts college this fall.

Luke, 19, says she lost her hearing as a newborn but has worked to communicate without the use of sign language and has honed her ability to speak and comprehend others with help from family and an implant device designed to produce sound for the hearing impaired.

Luke says she hopes to show other young deaf girls and women how to be positive and love themselves for who they are.

Luke will compete in the Miss Deaf America pageant in 2010.
