SALT LAKE CITY -- Members of an entire community pulled out their shovels Saturday to turn an empty lot into a community garden.
Volunteers put up 36 boxes of soil for the People's Portable Garden at 877 S. 200 West. The land belongs to the Redevelopment Agency of Salt Lake City and is awaiting redevelopment.
The garden will provide the community members that work in it with fresh food and give them a chance to become friends.
Marianne Becnel designed the garden. She said, "It's a good way to get out and get to know your neighbors and work with each other."
Wasatch Community Gardens and the redevelopment agency sponsored the project as a way to stimulate growth and revitalize different areas of the city.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports neighborhood gardeners rent the plots for $25 a year, which includes water.
