SALT LAKE CITY -- Students from around the state were rewarded for their hard work Saturday night. These teens have excelled in science and math.
The EnergySolutions Foundation gave nearly 120 scholarships to 10th-graders from almost every high school in Utah.
The students each received $2,000 to study math, science and engineering. Three students got additional money. The top student, Nathan Hulet from Layton High School, got an addition $25,000.
He said, "I wasn't even thinking about it, ever. I was just hoping that I could get the $2,000.
Hulet realizes the impact scholarships can have on students like him. He said the money will go toward "tuition for school, housing, books, everything you need."
Steve Cramer, CEO of EnergySolutions, said, "America is falling behind in science and engineering, and we need more great young people to take the hard road and really study the math and science."
He added the company liked "Being able to bring kids along to let them fulfill their dreams and ambitions in life."
Hulet said, "I think it's great that they are giving kids a chance to go to college when they might otherwise not be able to."
The scholarship program is designed help keep America competitive in math and sciences. The students can use the money to attend any college, but they must plan to seek a science or math degree.
Davis High School student Matt Munns said, "It's great because it gives me the motivation to keep going."
The judges who chose the scholarship recipients were impressed by how hard the students have worked and how motivated they are to make the world a better place.
