SALT LAKE COUNTY -- The Jordan School District is facing a large round of possible layoffs due to budget cuts and the district split.
Jordan officials say they are facing a $9 million shortfall because of the upcoming split. State budget cuts have chopped $16 million. Now the district must shave $25 million from its $300 million budget.
The Board of Education is looking at every penny-pinching option and could cut the equivalent of 122 full time employees. But the board says it will not lay off teachers. A lot of the cuts will come through attrition and retirements. Layoffs will come on the district level.
Jordan Superintendent Barry Newbold wrote on his blog, "The board is doing all it can to insulate classroom teachers and students."
The cuts should be final by the end of the month.
East Salt Lake County residents voted in 2007 to leave the Jordan School District and form their own Canyons School District. The split goes into effect July 1.
