SALT LAKE CITY -- A local woman made history Thursday in the Salt Lake City Fire Department. Capt. Martha Ellis received a promotion and became the first woman ever to hold the rank of division chief in Salt Lake.
Ellis will also serve as the city's new fire marshal, a position that represents the organization in the business community.
"It is a huge honor, and I just look at it as a great opportunity to hopefully inspire other young women to reach for things that might have seemed unattainable in the past. And I see it as a great opportunity to work for the citizens in a different capacity now," Ellis said.
Ellis has been with the department for 14 years and has won the Women's Firefighter Combat Challenge five times in her career.
