Utah Jazz games simply won't be the same without Hot Rod Hundley calling the action.
His decision to retire after a 42-year broadcasting career - 35 of them with the Jazz - leaves a significant void in the lives of fans that relied on his keen eyes and distinctive voice to experience the volatile exploits of their beloved NBA team. Whether a player was shooting a "leapin' leaner" or a "frozen rope" those listening to Hundley could visualize what was happening. You could almost see the "belt-high dribble" and feel assured when the game was "in the ol' refrigerator."
He is without doubt one of the all-time play-by-play greats.
For the Jazz and this community, he represented stability: more than 3,000 games, through a number of bosses, coaches, and venues, and of course a host of players! Tune in on game night and there was "Hots" reminding everyone that "you gotta love it, baby." And we did.
KSL can't fault him at age 74 for wanting to forgo the rigors of the road, the separation from family and the constant pressure of getting it right. Yes, "with a gentle push, and a mild arc," the seasoned pro is going home. We join Jazz fans everywhere in wishing him the best.
