LOGAN, Utah (AP) -- Utah State University has banned tobacco sales and advertising on the northern Utah campus.
USU's Board of Trustees voted unanimously for the ban on Friday. The vote is largely symbolic because an information prohibition on cigarettes and alcohol is already in place. However, the decision will impact a small on-campus convenience store which sells lighters and several brands of cigarettes.
The board's resolution is a milder version of a proposal from student government leaders last year that would have banned all tobacco use on campus.
School administrators debated the proposal, but feared that outlawing smoking would alienate foreign students and become a retention issue with some faculty.
