SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A national health care policy group says a third of Utahns under age 65 were without medical insurance at some point during the past two years.
In a report released Tuesday, Families USA says the numbers don't take into account the effect the current economic downturn has had on coverage.
According to the report, during 2007 and 2008 some 784,000 Utahns -- or 32.2 percent of people under age 65 -- were uninsured for some period of time.
Of those, 71 percent, or 557,000, were without insurance for six months or more.
Utahns over age 65 are eligible for Medicare and most are covered.
An estimate from the Utah Department of Health places the number of uninsured Utahns at just under 300,000 in 2008.
