(KSL News) -- Some big names are speaking out against a 55-year prison sentence given to a Utah man for his first offense.

145 legal officials, including former US Attorneys General, have filed a brief with the US Supreme Court, asking it to reconsider the long sentence given to Weldon Angelos.

Among the prominent names are former US Attorney Janet Reno and former FBI Director William Sessions.

Angelos was convicted of 16 counts of violating federal arms, drug and money laundering laws in December 2003.

Three different gun charges required a mandatory minimum sentence of 55 years in prison, a sentence his judge called "cruel, unjust and irrational."

The US Supreme Court has yet to decide if they will hear the case.
