(KSL News) -- Salt Lake Community College President Cynthia Bioteau wasn't joking when she called up former students on the telephone asking them to come back to school.

The former students thought it was a joke when Bioteau asked what she could do to bring the students back, and it worked.

Bioteau says she and other administrators worked the phones when 13-thousand students failed to enroll again this fall. Nearly 40 percent have returned.

Overall enrollment Utah's public universities and colleges is down about 1 percent this year.
