ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, Oct 25, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- Ethiopian officials have announced the 3.2 million-year-old remains of a female hominid referred to as "Lucy" will tour the United States in 2007.
Officials said the archaeological discovery, which has only been shown to the public twice in Ethiopia since its 1974 discovery in Africa, will spend six years touring the United States with an exhibit featuring other items from the country, AfricaNews.com reported Wednesday.
The tour is scheduled to begin at the Houston Museum of National Science in September 2007. The items then travel to 10 other U.S. museums before returning to Ethiopia in 2013.
Ethiopian officials said they hope the exhibit will help to change the image of the country from one known for its poverty and famine to being regarded as the cradle of the human species.
