OGDEN -- An Ogden man is faces some legal trouble for making an unauthorized withdrawal from Ogden's food bank.

Police say the man had been working as a volunteer at the Joyce Hansen Hall Northern Utah Food Bank.

On Wednesday, he was asked to get some frozen ham and chops from a walk-in freezer. Two coworkers, though, saw him putting the meat into two large bags instead.

Police say another coworker followed the man to his home nearby, then returned and contacted a supervisor.

Officers say the man's mother was stocking the meat in the freezer when they got there. "She thought he was just bringing it home because he could," said Lt. Scott Sangberg. Police could not find any of the hams that were missing.

The man was cited, and Sangberg says it's a safe bet he won't be returning as a volunteer. He was actually taking part in an on-the-job training program at the food bank.

A shelter official says it's all too bad. She says they'll try to help anyone who needs help, if they'll ask. But she says the theft essentially equates to taking food out of a hungry person's mouth.
