SALT LAKE CITY -- Mortuary schools are noticing a spike in enrollment as people try to cash in on one of the "old reliable" in life: death. It's all thanks to the recession.

Larkin Mortuary funeral director Shannon Warenski says there are more students at Salt Lake Community College. "We're consistently having around 15 to 20 students in the college classroom at one time," he said.

The old average was 10.

Warenski says many don't initially consider the mortuary business for fear it will be depressing, but he says it is very fulfilling.

As far as job security, Warenski says there are two things you can count on in life: death and taxes.
