The campaign season is in full swing.

Those seeking office are out "pressing the flesh." Their staffs, if they have them, are mailing out fliers, making phone calls and adding to the collection of signs along strategic roadways. The last-minute media blitz is about to get going.

Once again, we're witnessing democracy in action.

KSL doesn't endorse candidates for political office. Never have! And we don't intend to change that policy now. However, that doesn't mean we're not inclined to suggest the type of candidates we'd encourage Utah's electorate to support.

First, we urge you to study the issues and the candidates' various approaches to dealing with them. Do your best to get beyond the glossy photographs, the catchy slogans and one-line responses to complex issues.

Then seek out and support those candidates who would be inclined to govern and legislate honestly, and in a spirit of wisdom, understanding and compromise rather than a desire to impose views that tend toward ideological extremism, whether on the left or on the right. Indeed, gravitate toward those candidates, regardless of party affiliation, who offer genuine reasoned solutions to the state's most pressing problems.

Becoming an informed voter isn't easy. It takes time and effort. But we encourage you to do it. It is a responsibility each citizen has simply by living in our remarkable republic.
