SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Utah environmental officials are recommending that three counties be considered noncompliant with stricter federal limits on ozone pollution.

The Department of Environmental Quality sent its recommendation to Gov. Jon Huntsman on Wednesday. Huntsman has until March 12 to forward his recommendation to the federal Environmental Protection Agency.

The DEQ says three years of data indicate ozone levels in Salt Lake, Davis and a portion of Weber counties exceed the EPA's new limits set a year ago.

The DEQ is recommending the three counties for non-attainment status, a designation that would require the state to create a plan to reduce pollution.

The EPA is expected to make an official designation in 2010.
