In 1979, Conrad Tanner was offered the chance to purchase an existing auto transmission business that was failing. He already had experience working in several other transmission shops, so he decided to buy it. Things worked out better than Conrad could have hoped: This year marks his 30th anniversary of being in business.
Auto Transmission, located in West Jordan, specializes in providing transmission work. Conrad says most auto shops today dabble in a little bit of everything car related, but he has focused his business solely on transmission work. And his sons Shaun, Tristen, Shae and Trent and his semi-adopted son, Alex, all work with him in the business.
Conrad believes in being honest, fair and open with customers—a technique that has worked out well for him. The good reputation of the shop has drawn customers from as far away as Nevada and California. Being known as an honest businessman is helpful in tough economic times and when commerce slows down, because customers know they will not be taken advantage of.
Transmissions are a complicated, and sometimes frustrating, part of the car. Conrad advises motorists to service their transmissions often. In fact, 50 percent of transmission problems could be solved if car owners serviced them more frequently. He also recommends allowing cars to warm up in the winter before driving them and to never rock back and forth when trying to get unstuck in the snow.
Conrad tells me he's had to change locations four times in the 30 years the company has been in business. However, his current location, on 9626 S. Hawley Park Road in West Jordan, doubled the size of the previous shop. The property where Auto Transmission is located has the space to double in size again, but Conrad's goal is to continue growing and maintain the personal touch his customers have come to rely on.
