(KSL News) An 81-year-old Salt Lake man trying to protect his geese from foxes now is charged with animal cruelty.

Merrill Wilson lives near the Freedom Trail in Memory Grove. Last November he put out strychnine to poison foxes that had been coming into his yard and killing his pet geese. Unfortunately the poison also apparently killed 2 dogs that had been brought to the park to play in the off-leash area.

Prosecutors say it doesn't matter that the poison was on private property and that Wilson is still responsible for the dogs' deaths.

If convicted he could spend up to a year in jail.
