(KSL News) A man accused of stabbing his father more than 20 times is now competent to stand trial for the crime.
Michael Kirsch has been in the Utah State Hospital since November when he was declared mentally incompetent. Since that time he has been medicated.
Yesterday his lawyer informed the court the hospital had declared him competent to proceed. The Deseret News reports a hearing on the matter will be held later this month.
Kirsch is charged with murder and aggravated assault in connection with his father's death at his home in Orem last Father's Day. He is accused of using a carving knife to repeatedly stab 62-year-old Christopher Kirsch.
